A Day in the Life…

For all those people who believe that teachers arrive at 9:00 and leave at 3:00, here is my typical day. This is my normal Monday schedule!

6:30 A.M. begin 45-minute commute to school

7:15 A.M. arrive at school; make copies, prepare for day’s lessons, and activities

7:40 A.M. one last bathroom break

7:45 A.M. greet students at door

Commence endless questions and random observations from students. 

Take attendance, collect money, forms for office, monitor morning procedures, etc.

8:15 A.M.-9:15 A.M. 5th grade science

This week we are studying force and motion. 

9:15 A.M-10:15 A.M. 7th grade science

We are currently studying atomic theory.

10:15 A.M.-11:15 A.M. 8th grade science

We are currently studying physical and chemical properties.

11:15 A.M.-11:45 A.M. 6th grade homeroom

Back in my homeroom class, students are called to lockers and then we continue with vocabulary class.

11:45 A.M. time to get ready for lunch, pass out lunch cards, choose students that get to play on the playground, get jackets and recess toys

11:50 A.M. supervision of students for bathroom break

11:55 A.M.-12:15 P.M. lunch-20 minutes to head to the bathroom, my mailbox, and scarf my lunch down

12:15 P.M.-12:40 P.M. recess-teachers are responsible for supervising their own classes at recess

12:45 P.M.-1:00 P.M. Sustained Silent Reading time

1:00 P.M.-2:00 P.M. 6th grade science

We are finishing up a unit on physical and chemical changes.

2:00 P.M.-2:45 P.M Junior High Advisory

We work with small, mixed groups of 5th-8th graders on additional reading and math skills.

2:45 P.M.-3:00 P.M. Pack up and dismissal

3:00 P.M.-3:15 P.M. Dismissal/Teachers are responsible for being with their students for these 15 minutes waiting for parents to pick them up. Any students not picked up are sent to aftercare.

3:15 P.M.-4:30 P.M. Faculty meeting

4:30 P.M. time to leave–with a bag full of papers to grade

7:00 P.M.-8:15 P.M. grading papers, other school work at home

This schedule is a typical day and is generally my regular Monday schedule.

By my count, I work 10.5 hours between the regular school day, before and after school, and at home! Here’s to those naysayers that I don’t put in enough hours!
