Role of a Union

Teachers’ unions are on the decline, so I think that we need to reinvent the union and its goals.
Yes, teachers’ unions exist to protect the rights and responsibilities of teachers. However, I feel that unions need to do a better job of speaking up for the students. We need unions to take a more vocal role in advocating for smaller class sizes. Unions need to speak up about high drop-out rates. Poverty plagues our schools and low parent participation need to be addressed.
What if our unions did a better job of advocating for our students and families instead of fighting over pay increases? What would our schools look like then?
We need a students’ union that is just as powerful as the teachers’ unions in most major cities.
