Literary Culture Education

Last week was spirit week at our school.  It is where students and teachers dress as different themes to promote school spirit the week before the Homecoming Football game.

Monday’s theme was “Rock Star”.  I decided to go as Amy Whinehouse (notice the pun.  great for middle school humor) but my 7th graders didn’t know who I was.

Very same day, I am talking about Mark Twain and again, many student did not know who he was.  Same is true for King Arthur, Peter Pan, and Goldie Locks.  Where has education gone wrong and not included cultural references enough for at least backgound knowledge to build literary allusions?
