I am trying something new this year. Every day in my classroom has a theme. Think Mickey Mouse Club but with Educational themes. Here is a list with a brief explanation.
Mundane Monday – Mundane means boring, dull and unexciting. This is a fitting adjective for Monday but only if you know what “mundane” means. On Mundane Mondays we look a unusual vocabulary words
Techno Tuesday- We devote some time to investigate new technologies in the classroom, software and hardware.
Whens?day- When is the test? When is that paper due? Whens?day of course.
T(heard)sday- There are many changes happening in education at all levels. On T(heard)sday we talk about rumors or news items which will affect their education.
Frightday- This is an off-shoot of my Neil Gaiman’s All Hallows Read Zombie Flashmob from last year. Each Frightday we look at or talk about things that are scary. We started with Gaiman’s Youtube video but we will also talk about other fears such as failing a test, disappointing people, and spiders.
Sometimes the theme may overtake the class period if it is worthwhile and educational. Sometimes it may only take five minutes at the beginning of class. Rarely is it mundane.
(Side story shorty- One of my seventh graders thought Mundane was a type of dog.)
