Irresistible Learning Game: FreeRice.com

One of my kids turned me on to this great learning game. Every correct answer supplies several grains of rice to the hungry around the world.

You can do vocabulary all day long–and if you are competetive, you may not want to stop beating your best score.

There’s more than vocabulary, though. You can practice many academic disciplines, even art history!

Go there and get your students to play too. Irresistible!

Great site, especially for my Humanities students. We incorporate Art, English and Social Studies curriculum that must meet New York State Standards which include state exams in English and History. We also like to incorporate a “Humanitarian” purpose to our integrated projects and assessments. This site can be a great addition to these ends – it will build knowledge skills in all subject areas as well as contribute to a Humanitarian effort. This year our 10th Grade Humanities Class was inspired by a story, BEATRICE’S GOAT, from an Ethnic Pen Forum that our school annually presents. The story gives the real-life account of how a young African girl realizes her dreams to go to school and have a better life for her family through the efforts of Heifer International, an organization that coordinates donations to provide animals that can sustain product and income for the family such as goats, chickens, and oxen. Beatrice’s family received a goat, and was able to better provide for themselves from the goat milk sold. Our Humanities class made clay goats in coordination with our unit on Africa and Imperialism, and donated the proceeds from “selling” the goats to the purchase and donation of an animal through Heifer International. (www.Heifer.org) Thanks for your inspiration. Hope someone was inspired by our activity.

Another great charity site is AIDtoCHILDREN.com. It donates money to children in need through World Vision.
